TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane hydrochloride, commonly known as Tris Hydrochloride, has been primarily used for simplifying the process of preparing Tris buffer solutions. The use of solid Tris Hydrochloride avoids using more hazardous hydrochloric acid, and allows a more precise ratio to be measured to achieve a specific buffer pH. This also avoids any possibility of titration overshoot, where too much acid is added requiring additional Tris base, resulting in a different ionic strength than desired.

A Tris/Tris Hydrochloride Buffer table is referenced to show specific buffer quantities required for a wide range of pH buffers.
